My grandparents' archives have a whole new tone to them as I look at them now and recreate this imagery through paint. It's around 1920- 1924. They had endured their own pandemic on top of the first world war. The Spanish flu infected 500 million people worldwide and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million souls - more than all that were killed during World War 1. No wonder they roared! They walked around asking "why am I alive"
Here we are 100 years later facing our own worldwide trauma.
The more I ponder this correlation and shared life experience with my grandparents, the more I want to paint about it.
This is my grandmother and grandfather on the beach.
This is a continued examination of my thesis work from OCAD, check out “Ancestral Overlap” for more from this series.
