My son helps me explore abstraction. His effortless mark making and fearless shape making begins the piece, and I finish it. The colours express my inherited optimism while the aggressive brush strokes express my flowing anxiety. My human experience has been a swirl of the two.

I was a part of Mothra, a parent-children run art residency on Toronto Island, first in 2019 and then again in 2022. Through this week I explored abstraction with my son. Abstraction seems to be the best language for the sensations of birth and mothering. I act as a sensory organ along with my son and these are the paintings we collaborated on.
